Well, guys, we’re sending power back to the grid.

March 20, 2023. “Well, guys, we’re sending power back to the grid,” beamed Little Peaks Generator Contractor, Scott McClelland, on Monday morning. Over the weekend, Scott met with Little Peaks solar power team, including Jim Bernard (left) and Doug McKiege (right), to connect Little Peaks’ solar operation to the NYSEG grid. As of Monday, our digital tracker showed that we were putting solar energy back into the town’s electrical grid. Doug McKiege, a Keene Valley resident who has underwritten several local solar projects, is donating Little Peaks’ solar system to the schoool, with the guidance of Jim Bernard, longtime Little Peaks volunteer, and ADK Solar in Plattsburgh.

The McKiege family donation will allow Little Peaks to generate enough energy to operate the lights, kitchens, and heating system throughout the year. Excess energy is stored in a battery wall in the basement and shared back with NYSEG. This incredible act of generosity allows us to operate a sustainable building and business that mirrors our environmentally-focused program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers that places a premium on sustainable stewardship, responsible land use, and seasonal knowledge.

Meanwhile, Little Peaks is busy interviewing teacher applicants and enrolling prospective families for the new center, slated to open this summer. If you or someone you know is interested in working at Little Peaks, please check out our open positions by visiting https://www.little-peaks.org/employment.

As the snow melts and the ground thaws, we’re getting closer and closer to opening our doors to eager families and excited educators. Stay tuned for more updates on our opening date, plans to celebrate the new center, and the many milestones to come!
